00144 Chinese character of 明 and pronounce ming4

A simile is a rhetorical device used to compare two things that are similar or related directly

Usually by using connecting words such as “like,” “as,” or “similar to.” In a simile, the subject being described is called the tenor, the thing used to illustrate it is called the vehicle, and the connecting word is the marker.

In this sentence, “時間” is the tenor, “海綿裡的水” is the vehicle, and “像” is the marker.

The comparison shows that just as water can be squeezed out of a sponge, time can always be found if you make the effort.

Another simple example is: 「她的笑容像太陽一樣溫暖。」

Here, “笑容” is the tenor,

“太陽” is the vehicle,

and “像” is the marker.

Whenever you see words such as “如,” “似,” “像,” “彷彿,” or “宛若” in a sentence, you can usually identify them as similes.
