Hello everyone! I’m Tora, and welcome back to my Chinese learning blog.

If you are just starting your Mandarin journey and preparing for the HSK 1, understanding how to describe where things are is a huge milestone. Today, we are looking at one of the most essential structures for daily life:

Let’s start with a quick challenge!

✅ Correct Answer: B) 在

The full sentence is: 我的書在桌子上。

Pronunciation:

  • Mandarin: Wǒ de shū zài zhuōzi shàng.
  • Cantonese: ngo5 dik1 syu1 zoi6 zoek3 zi2 soeng6.

English: My book is on the table.

💡 Tora’s Grammar Breakdown: The “Zài” Structure

In English, we use “am/is/are” to talk about location. In Chinese, we use the specific word .

1. The Magic Formula

To tell someone where something or someone is, follow this simple pattern:

主語 (Subject) + 在 + 地點 (Location)

    • Mandarin: zài
    • Cantonese: zoi6
    • Meaning: to be at / in / on

2. Real-Life Example

Let’s look at the example from the HSK syllabus:

圖書館在學校旁邊。
(The library is next to the school.)

Pronunciation:

  • Mandarin: Túshūguǎn zài xuéxiào pángbiān.
  • Cantonese: tou4 syu1 gun2 zoi6 hok6 haau6 pong4 bin1.

3. Why are the other options wrong?

  • A) 是 (shì / si6): Used to link two nouns (e.g., “I am a teacher”). We don’t use it for location.
  • C) 有 (yǒu / jau5): Means “to have” or “there is.” The word order is different (Place + 有 + Object).
  • D) 去 (qù / heoi3): Means “to go.” It implies movement, not staying in one spot.

📖 Tora’s Tip for HSK 1

In both Mandarin and Cantonese, the word  is your best friend for locations. Whether you are in Hong Kong or Beijing, the structure “Someone + 在 + Somewhere” remains a golden rule!

🎯 Bonus Challenge: Check Your Understanding!

“Teacher Wang is at the school.”

  1. 王老師是學校。
  2. 在學校王老師。
  3. 學校在王老師。
